I thought Mason was adorable. I saw him more as a Mike Newton rather than a Jacob Black.. He was cute and fun. But, I wasn't attached to him. It just must have sucked for Rose because he died for her.. Because he REALLY liked her and she didn't like him like that.. But I think it was sad he died.. Just necessary. We have to give a little to get some in return.

Mason = Mike
Adrian = Jacob
Dmitri = Edward

I was crying so hard when Mason died, I mean I like Dimitri and everything but Mason does remind me of Jacob in twilight but at least he didn't die =(...Mason was so sweet and I got pretty mad at Rose for not giving him a chance...I think he would have died better...Since Mason died I really don't want to keep reading but I'll just have to even If Mason is dead...I really liked him

Actually, reflecting more and having just recently re-read the series, jedib's comparisons make more sense. Especially in Twilight (the first book of the Twilight saga), Mike was WAY more puppy dog than Jacob. Jacob became more puppy-ish and possessive in NM and Eclipse. Adrian doesn't exactly come off as puppyish. I am not quite sure how to describe his approach to Rose. It may sound a bit silly, but Adrian kind of reminds me of Pepe Le Pew - that cartoon skunk with the French accent always after that cat who accidentally gets a white stripe painted down her back. Adrian's all about trying to woo Rose. Jacob wouldn't know from wooing if it were to slap him in the face. Adrian tries to woo Rose with that big box of perfumes, alcohol, dresses, parties, etc. But Jacob? He didn't try any of that...and other than teaching her how to ride the motorcycles, what did he ever do to woo or entice Bella?

In that sense, I disagree that Adrian = Jacob. But I totally agree that Mason = Mike Newton.

Wooing is based on the guy. Adrian's a rich guy so buying presents is his natural instinct...buy affection. Jacob has no money. So he wooed by fixing up the bikes, handcrafting the charm for her charm bracelet, making her laugh, etc.

When you woo, (and I only can guess since I'm not male), you try to do what would impress the girl but also make her like you. So each girl, and each guy, will result in variables that can't translate across the board.

Mike and Mason were the same b/c although good friends, they stood no chance.

Jacob and Adrian were the same b/c although the logical choice for a logical future, they stood no real chance. They were the alternatives that the girl needed to see and know she had a choice.

Edward and Dmitri were the same b/c although there was no logic to the choice as far as future children, white picket fence, etc., they still won out in the end.

I didn't particularly care for Mason. I mean, for Rose to actually give him a shot was actually to try and forget about Dimitri and that didn't even work. Rose was probably like throw me a bone and Mason was there.

He sort of pissed me off with the whole jealousy thing but come on... Rose is hot! of course guys would be all over her. I mean does love completely make you blind, deaf and dumb. He died and I felt nothing but they don't call me a heartless bitch for nothing I guess *thinks real hard* nope.. i am a bitch, proud and well... bitchy.

But Rose's reaction was freaking priceless. Damn, I would have loved to actually see someone do that in real life. (I am a sick and twisted person. Get with it. ) But seriously, how insane she must have looked. WOW!!

So Mason has served his purpose and moved on. THank god.

i was in cass when i read that mason died and i started crying and my best friends name is mason.....(nothing like that mason in the book)so i had to tell my whole english call why i was crying in S.S.R......it sucked!!!!!but i missed him!!!!

I wouldn't consider Mason a puppy dog. He cared a lot for Rose and tried to protect her. It was sad to see him die, he was a likeable character to me.

Loads of people on this forum are comparing VA to Twilight which is terrible, because Twilight sux and VA rocks!!!!!!!!!

Mason was awesome. I saw him more like Roses brother though, I loved his humour.
