PostSubject: Twilight Versus Vampire Academy   Thu Jan 22, 2009 12:43 pm

My judgement on the book is pretty easy:Must not make me put down the book and make me force myself to read on! It must be able to make me feel like I'm really in the world the story tells! That's why I love VA! It is 1000x better than Twilight which many of the times I HAVE to force myself to read and I cnt picture the entire scene clearly cos LOTS of useless descriptions are going on and I cnt see any PLOT there. It just goes on and on, and Bella really, she's like a baby. Who the hell so clumsy keeps falling down?! Then that means that person either has disablility or DON't know how to walk. And she's too dependant and whiny. That's utterly ridiculous. Is the book trying to tell everyone how important the romance is on top of all things! Get a life. Obviously there's no balance in the book itself. And the vocabs and descriptions are more focused on than the plotting part. Then why not the author write a book about an account/theory of love? To my opinion, I think a YA should teach teenagers something to learn, not reflecting on the negative sides only. And honestly, if there are no vampires mentioned in this book, Bella will be a boring character. I hate to see so many people are obsessed over it. I mean I cnt see why. I've read the books and it doesnt interest me at all. Even Marked and Buffy the vampire slayer are better than Twilight. And also not to forget, Vampire Academy too Smile Comparing Vampire Academy and Twilight, to me Vampire Academy is more realistic.
So what do you think? Which one is better in terms of enjoying it?

You took the words right out of my mouth! Bella is quite possibly the weekest main character to have ever existed! From the way she talks to the way she acts. She had a glimer of a personality in Twilight but as the series progressed she lost it. What kind of a character is identified by tripping? Like seriously. She gets everyting she wants at the end and doesn't have to sacrifice anything. She is not rational at all and I think that is what make me dislkie her the most. I have so many problems with Breaking Dawn...from its poorly written plot to the weak character development. Ugh it was a disaster.

Vampire Academy is loads better. Too bad so many people are brainwashed by the Twilight craze.

I agree and disagree. SM's scene setting leaves much to be desired. People all of a sudden are in different places or the scene is impossible (remember Edward putting his cheeks against her throat...try that with someone. Not remotely comfortable.

On the other hand, Twilight is universally called "addictive". Despite her shortcomings, she writes "desperate longing" really well. Read The Host and see what I mean.

Bella is no Rosemarie but at least she's smarter and stronger than Zoey Redbird. Bella's strength comes from her convictions and her intellect. She decides on what she wants and goes for it come what may. Nothing deters her. That may not be typical feminist strength or physical strength but it is something to be admired. As for her clumsiness, I've known plenty of people who are so self-conscious that they goof up more because of it.

That said, Rosemarie is stronger than Zoey Redbird (HoN) and Bella Swan (T) in physical ways. Arguably, Bella's stronger in the maturity department.

The reson for me saying this is because I love Romance and Vampire and so i think Twilight goes into that more... Vapire A. Is more of "Roza" Becoming a 'gardian' am i right? but people and people always have different opinions.... so yeah i am For Twilight... BUT i love Vampyre ACADEMY!

I'm with Malyse. I like both. And I like Twilight a eensy bit more than Vampire Academy. I had a ball reading the Twilight saga. I couldn't put them down. I went through them in about 2 weeks (and that's a record for me, I'm usually quite a slow reader). I took a bit longer to read the Vampire Academy, it could have been because of timing on my part. At the time I was reading Twilight, I had more free time to indulge my 'addiction'.

I like VA because I do believe the characters (for the most part) are a bit better developed. I kinda wish that SM would either have spent more time describing the characters OR write more books focused just on them. For example, I'd love a book all about Carlisle and Esme. Or even Alice and Jasper.

I'm not that big a fan of Bella. I'm more interested in the Cullens. Bella sorta provides the human perspective to this family.

I also read Twilight first. I bought Shadow Kiss on Amazon, sorta by accident. I needed an extra purchase to get free shipping. I didn't realize at the time that it was the 3rd in a series. So I bought the other two and read them all. Like I said, I like them both, and I don't see why I shouldn't like them both. I do think the relationship with Rose and Dimitri is a bit stronger. That is, you know more WHY they love each other. With Bella, it seems that she loves Edward 1) because he's gorgeous (and we can never forget it! She says it ALL the time) and 2) because she has this dependency on him. I understand the dependency. I do...since she had always to take care of her parents and didn't get the same kind of care in return. Edward gave her the attention and in a sense he depends on her, or is addicted to her. However with Rose and Dimitri, they know the obstacles, and they are on the same wavelength. Being of the same 'species' helps, too. There's also this mutual respect between Rose and Dimitri...well Rose tends to idolize Dimitri but he thinks she has strengths, too.

There are fun things in both books. I like Rose's hot headed personality and her sassy mouth. I like the jokes in Twilight, like how Emmett finds Bella a constant source of amusement. I don't really know why I like Adrian, there's something about him that makes me laugh. And I'm sorry, but cutest character ever goes to Alice! I just love that girl! The leading men are both attractive in their own ways. Edward is the consummate 'old fashioned gent'. He's not all about jumping the girl's bones. He opens the car door (or tries to), he is "that boy" who goes down on one knee to propose, he was also going to seek Charlie's permission to ask for Bella's hand, etc. And I think all those things are a BIG part of his appeal to women.

That's not to say Dimitri is the opposite, he's not, really. He's more modern, sure. And..um...SPOILER! SPOILER! SPOILER!
Sure, he didn't wait until Rose and him were married or whatever it is that Dhampirs can do to make permanent a relationship, to have sex, but he held out for a long time. He didn't rush into it. They come from different times, too. Dimitri is modern, and mortal, so he's not going to have values from the 1900s/1910s. And that's OK. He's strong, he genuinely cares for Rose. He has a strong sense of duty and 'what is right'.

I've written way too much, sorry.

For YA books they're very different. TW has a lot of emotion but it's (sorry) teenybopper angsty love. In VA, these teens are forced to grow up so fast that they are older in a sense. Where Bella's major issue is "will I trip" or "will I stand out" or "will Edward talk t me" (i.e. typical teen stuff), Rose deals with mature themes: destiny v. choice, sacrifice, friendship, honor, etc.

To me, that they're about young love and vampires is the beginning, and end, of the comparison.

You're definitely right about the themes. I totally felt I was reading a more 'grown up' book when reading VA. But sometimes, you need the sappy romantic stuff. I read Harlequins all the time, too...and I just find them a bit of fun, like 'brain candy'. Like I said, I don't see why I can't or shouldn't like both. If not for Twilight, I wouldn't have gotten into this Vampire YA genre at all.

Try "starts to suck severely"! Laughing I keep noticing flaws everyday. It's painful, though, cause I really liked the story. I just think it was very poorly developed. And after watching "True Blood" and reading a bit of "Charlaine Harris" I also noticed that Twilight is VERY unoriginal. That's another way of saying "copied", it's like the soft "Mormon" version of Harris' story.

I love both series, they are both good series so...
however I would have to say that VA is alittle head.
I would also like to point out that many books are going to seem "copied" thats just how it goes

i have read both vampire academy and twilight more than once and i have to say that vampire academy is better. if you think about what's the point of twilight? so, bella meats edward and then she becomes a vampire and all that. the end. then you think about vampire academy and how rose learns all of this stuff and becomes more mature and whatever. if you compare the two series you can see that vampire academy actually makes sense while twilight just talks about stuff. so, i have to say that vampire academy is better.
